I offer business coaching for busy mums, because, lets face it, it’s two of the most difficult parts of your life to juggle and it’s vital to get it right on both accounts.
Being a mum is a full-time job, but what happens when you add entrepreneurship to the mix? The juggle can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re trying to manage not only your children’s needs but also the demands of a growing business.
I get it—I’m Sarah Kauter, a business coach who is also a busy mum. Not only am I a mother to three wonderful daughters, ages 9, 13, and 14, but I also run four businesses.
Life has thrown me challenges—one of my children was born blind, and another is neurodivergent—so I know firsthand what it’s like to navigate the unique demands of parenting and entrepreneurship. This blog is designed for mums like you, who need actionable strategies to balance business with family, stay sane, and thrive.
In todays post, I’ll look at how business coaching for busy mums can help you find balance, reduce overwhelm, and build a profitable business that works around your life – not the other way around.
The Struggles of Being a Mumpreneur
Running a business is hard. Running a business while being a mum is even harder. It’s not just about finding time—it’s about creating a structure that helps you to succeed in both areas of your life.
Time Management
The day starts early, and by the time you’ve dropped the kids off at school, answered 15 emails, and dealt with the latest client issue, it’s time to pick them up again. Between school runs, medical appointments, and the day-to-day running of the house, it feels like there’s no time left to grow your business.
Tip: Implement Time Blocking . This simple technique helps you to prioritise what’s important. Time blocking involves setting aside specific hours for different tasks throughout the day. For instance, from 9 am to 11 am could be dedicated to deep work (client meetings, strategy sessions), and from 11:30 am to 1 pm, you focus on administrative tasks like emails. Reserve the afternoons for family or low-energy tasks. Time blocking ensures you’re intentional about your time, rather than reacting to every emergency that pops up.
Action Step: Sit down at the beginning of each week and block out time for family, work, and self-care. Start small—maybe two hours a day of focused work time. Stick to these blocks as best you can, and adjust as needed.
Self-Care:
When you’re managing a business, your children, and a household, self-care is often the first thing to go. But we all know you can’t pour from an empty cup. If you don’t take care of yourself, you’re not going to be the best version of yourself for your family or your business.
Tip: Schedule “Me Time”. Block out an hour a day (or even 15 minutes, if that’s all you can manage) to do something just for you—whether it’s reading, exercising, or simply sitting in silence. A well-rested, happy mum is a more efficient business owner.
Action Step: Add self-care time into your weekly time block. Treat this time as non-negotiable, like a meeting with a high-paying client. You’ll be surprised at how much more energy you have when you’re taking care of yourself.
Feeling Isolated:
This lifestyle can be isolating. Unlike a traditional office setting, where you can share ideas and struggles with colleagues, you’re often alone, working from home, and figuring things out on your own.
Tip: Find a Support Network. Whether it’s a Facebook group for entrepreneurial mums, a local networking group, or even a business coach, surrounding yourself with people who understand your journey is essential. Coaching specifically for mums like us can provide tailored advice, empathy, and strategies that work in your unique situation.
Action Step: Seek out a community where you can connect with other mumpreneurs. If you’re feeling stuck, consider joining my business coaching program, designed for mums who want to grow their businesses without sacrificing family time.
Overwhelm and Mental Load
The “mental load” refers to the invisible task of keeping everything organized—family schedules, business deadlines, social events, school requirements. The weight of trying to balance everything can lead to burnout, and fast.
Tip: Outsource and Automate. One of the key principles I teach is how to outsource and automate tasks. Start by outsourcing low-value tasks (cleaning, admin work, or social media management) to free up your time for high-impact activities like business strategy. Automation tools can also be a lifesaver—set up automated email responses, social media scheduling, or even a recurring grocery delivery service.
Action Step: Write down a list of tasks you do every day. Identify which can be outsourced or automated, and start with one or two. For example, you could hire a virtual assistant to manage your email inbox, or use tools like Hootsuite to automate your social media posts.
Guilt.
As a mum and a business owner, it’s easy to feel like you’re not doing enough—either for your kids or for your business. The guilt can be overwhelming, especially if you’re missing out on school events or feel like you’re saying “no” to family time.
Tip: Shift to Quality Over Quantity. You don’t need to spend every moment with your children to be a great mum. Instead, focus on making the time you do spend with them more meaningful. Similarly, you don’t need to work 24/7 to be a successful business owner—focus on working smarter, not harder.
Action Step: Pick one small way to spend intentional, quality time with your kids each day. This could be as simple as a 10-minute bedtime chat or a 20-minute walk after dinner. And remember, it’s okay to set boundaries with your business, too.
How Business Coaching for Busy Mums Can Help You
The business coaching I offer is specifically tailored to busy mums. It’s not just about helping you grow your business—it’s about teaching you how to integrate your life, so you can do both well. Here’s how it can make a difference:
1. Personalized Time Management Strategies
During our coaching sessions, we’ll dive deep into your schedule and identify areas where you can streamline, delegate, or let go of tasks altogether. I’ll help you design a schedule that works for both your business and your family.
2. Business Growth Without the Overwhelm
I know what it’s like to grow a business while raising children. I’ll teach you strategies to scale your business sustainably, so you can grow without burning out. We’ll focus on setting up systems that allow your business to work for you—not the other way around.
3. Support Through the Challenges of Parenthood
With a background in psychology, I bring a unique perspective to coaching that includes not just business strategy but also emotional and mental support. Whether you’re navigating the complexities of raising a child with disabilities or managing the ups and downs of everyday parenting, I’m here to help you find solutions that fit your unique life.
4. Accountability and Goal Setting
Many busy mums struggle with follow-through—after all, life gets in the way! As your business coach, I’ll hold you accountable for setting and achieving your goals. We’ll break your long-term vision into manageable, actionable steps so you can see real progress.
5. Work-Life Balance
Perhaps the most important area where business coaching can help is in finding the elusive work-life balance. With the right guidance, you can make time for your family, your business, and yourself—without sacrificing any of them.
Practical Tips for Busy Mumpreneurs
Here are some more actionable tips that I’ve found particularly useful for mumpreneurs trying to balance it all:
1. Prioritize Revenue-Generating Activities
Focus on the tasks that are directly tied to revenue. It’s easy to get bogged down with admin work or endless marketing tweaks, but you’ll see quicker growth by prioritizing the activities that actually make you money.
Action Step: Write down a list of tasks and rank them by how much they contribute to your income. Prioritize the top 3 tasks each week.
2. Use the Pomodoro Technique
This time-management method involves working in short, focused intervals (usually 25 minutes) followed by a 5-minute break. It’s perfect for busy mums who may only have small chunks of time to work between school runs or family obligations.
Action Step: Set a timer for 25 minutes and focus on one task. After 25 minutes, take a 5-minute break. Repeat this cycle four times, then take a longer break. This method helps you stay productive and prevents burnout.
3. Delegate at Home
You don’t have to do everything yourself. Get your kids involved in household chores, hire help when needed, or split tasks with your partner. Teaching children responsibility can lighten your load and instil important life skills in them.
Action Step: Create a chore chart or assign specific tasks to each family member. Even younger kids can help with simple tasks like folding laundry or setting the table.
